A major intersection was shut down after a major gas line was ruptured Wednesday.

Construction taking place at the corner of Northwest 13th and Southwest Williston Road resulted in workers accidentally cutting a gas line in the early morning.

Gainesville Fire Rescue responded to the scene around 10:30 a.m. followed by officials for the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Transportation. Traffic was completely shut down as Gainesville Regional Utilities worked to stop the leak.

“It’s a nightmare out there and it looks like it’s going to be quite some time, potentially up to 12 hours (before the leak is repaired)," said Art Forgey, ACSO spokesman.

No gas is leaking as of Wednesday afternoon and the line has been shut off, said Michael Cowart, GFR Assistant Chief.

“The gas line is from 3 to 4 inches in diameter, so it’s a main feed,” Cowart added. “We have been monitoring the air in the area just to ensure we don’t have any gas leaking out into the environment that we would have to evacuate anyone.”

GRU completed repairs on the line at 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to David Warm, GRU spokesman.
